What an invoice involves

An invoice bills a client for delivered work or goods: who owes, for what, how much and by when. Small offices that invoice from a Word template retype the client's legal name, tax ID and the line amounts every time.

The values usually already exist somewhere: in the purchase order, the signed contract, the delivery note or a quick message from a colleague. The invoice is just those values arranged into your layout.

The data that gets filled in

• Client: legal name, address, tax or VAT number
• Invoice number and issue date
• Description of goods or services
• Amounts, tax and total
• Payment deadline and bank account

The values usually arrive in:

• The purchase order or the signed contract
• The delivery note or work log
• An email or message with the agreed amounts
