What a deposit receipt involves

A deposit receipt confirms that earnest money changed hands: a rental deposit, a down payment on a car, an advance on a purchase. It names both parties, the amount, the purpose and the conditions of return, from a short settled form.

It is usually written on the spot, at a handover or a viewing, which is exactly when careful copying of ID numbers and amounts is least convenient.

The data that gets filled in

• Payer: full name, ID number
• Recipient: full name, ID number
• Amount and currency, in figures and words if your form has both
• Purpose of the deposit
• Date and place

The values usually arrive in:

• Photos of both IDs
• The bank transfer slip or a note of the cash amount
• The related agreement or listing the deposit refers to
