Run Done vs. Gavel

Gavel is a mature, well-regarded document automation platform, and for questionnaire-driven practices it is genuinely better than we are. The real question is where your data comes from: a person answering questions, or a pile of source documents. This page lays that out honestly.

What Gavel is good at

Gavel, formerly Documate and now part of Relativity, is a no-code legal document automation platform with two products: Gavel Workflows for document automation and Gavel Exec for AI contract review in Word. Its workflow product is deep and polished.

  • Client intake portals. You build a questionnaire once, share a link, and clients enter their own details. If your practice runs on intake forms, this is a real advantage we do not have.
  • Conditional logic and calculations. Workflows can branch on answers and compute values, which suits complex assembled documents.
  • Integrations and compliance. DocuSign, Stripe, Clio and Zapier integrations, HIPAA and SOC 2 claims, court-form libraries and white labeling.

Setup modelYou tag your Word template with variables using their Document Tagger add-in, then build an intake questionnaire in a web builder. Variable names are case-sensitive and must match the workflow.Upload the Word document you already use. No tagging, no questionnaire to build; the document is filled in place.
Where data comes fromA human answering the questionnaire, either your staff or the client through a shared link. Their published model is questionnaire-driven.The materials you already have: photos of IDs, scans, PDFs and text. Nobody types answers into a form.
Works inside Word?Word is where you tag templates, via their add-in. Workflows and generation run on the web platform.Yes, a Word add-in fills the open document in front of you. Our AppSource submission is in progress. Also available as a web app.
Formatting handlingPer their docs, formatting applied to a tag in the template carries to the output. The document is filled in place, so fonts, headers, spacing and layout stay exactly as you set them.
Review flowThe document generates from the questionnaire answers; you review the generated document.Every entered value is reviewed one by one against your materials. Anything not found stays blank rather than guessed.
Pricing modelSubscription tiers, listed at $83/mo (Lite), $165/mo annual (Standard), $290/mo (Pro) and from $417/mo annual (Scale) as of August 2026, with a 7-day free trial.Priced by document volume, with a 50-document free trial. Pricing is not final while we are in early access.

When to pick Gavel

  • Your clients fill in their own details, and an intake portal with a shareable questionnaire link is the workflow you want.
  • Your documents need conditional logic, calculations, or assembly from a clause library, built once and reused by the whole team.
  • You want DocuSign, Stripe, Clio or Zapier in the same flow, court-form libraries, or white labeling.

When to pick Run Done

  • Your data does not come from people answering questions. It arrives as IDs, scans, PDFs and text, and today someone reads and retypes it.
  • You do not want to rebuild your documents into tagged templates and questionnaires. Your existing Word file is filled as it is.
  • You want a per-value review where every entered value traces back to your materials, and anything not found stays blank.
  • EU data hosting, GDPR compliance and a signed data processing agreement matter for your clients' personal data.
